    Growing up, Catherine Madison knew her father was a war hero though he never talked about his POW experience. It wasn’t until after her father died and Madison found an envelope titled “The Whole Story” that she understood his harrowing journey.

    Writing the memoir brought a better understanding of her father and their strained relationship. “Just because he was a hero didn’t mean he wasn’t also a flawed human being, as vulnerable as rest of us,” Madison says.
