Growing and Sustaining a Non-Profit Organization

For the week of June 8th, 2014

The Great Recession hit non-profit organizations particularly hard. Charitable contributions and corporate sponsorships declined, and investments lost value. These days, nonprofits are seeking new ways to ensure their sustainability. This week on Access Minnesota, University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs Professor Melissa Stone and the founders of the Twin Cities-based nonprofit Grand Aspirations join us to discuss the challenges facing the state’s non-profit sector.

  • Guests: Melissa Stone, Gross Family Professor of Nonprofit Management in the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota; Matt Kazinka and Timothy DenHerder-Thomas, co-founders of Grand Aspirations, a Twin Cities-based non-profit working to build youth leadership in the green economy
  • Issues: How Minnesota supports non-profit organizations; The health of the non-profit sector in Minnesota; The challenges of turning an idea into a sustainable organization; The qualities of a successful non-profit
