The Economics of the Deficit and Our National Debt

For the week of November 10th, 2013

As the United States teetered on the edge of default last month, there were fears of another financial crisis similar to the one in 2008 that triggered the so-called “Great Recession.” Last minute action by Congress prevented that from happening, but many of the issues surrounding the national debt and government spending remain unresolved. On this week’s Access Minnesota, University of Minnesota Economics Professor Curt Anderson explains these complex issues in laypersons terms.

  • Guest: Curt Anderson, Professor and Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teacher of Economics and Director of the Center for Economic Education at the University of Minnesota-Duluth
  • Issues: The purpose of the debt ceiling; The deficit; The national debt; The state of the US economy; How the distribution of wealth and tax rates affect the debt and economic growth
